August 9th, 2010 by DominicI’ve been having many reflective and sharing sessions with Chuz over MSN for the past few days. I feel that even though it makes sense to confide in someone who will have solutions in hand, most people communicate with others just for the sake of communication. They want someone to be there to cheer them on, give them encouragement, the list goes on. However, I feel that former is being quite superficial. Although it does make one happy to tell them, “Hey, nice work there.” or even something such as “Thanks so much for your help.”, I can’t help but feel that sometimes such comments are done in excess until the point that it loses its meaning. That’s not the point of this post however, so instead of ranting, lets get straight to the point.
People are constantly saying “lol” over MSN for example, now its used when one does not know how to respond to a situation instead of expressing the fact that they are laughing out loud. That was just an example to illustrate my point.
Although I do enjoy chatting with people on MSN because it helps to pass the time or get to know someone better, people who really make heartfelt discussions online aren’t a dime a dozen. These sort of “come and go” chats as I’d like to say, are getting more and more widespread until the point it happens in real life situations. People whom used to converse for the sake of learning or understanding are now bringing online chatter and terminology into real life situations. This sort of causes the language we use everyday to worsen as the days go by.
So call me old-fashioned, but sometimes I feel that my society is facing the problem mentioned above. I’m not directing this at anyone, for all you know there may be people out there who do not suffer from this epidemic which is spreading throughout the country. People whom I pass or encounter during an MRT ride, while eating in a mall mostly tend to face this situation, and unfortunately I am one of them.
